How To Use Your Spray Foam Rental Effectively

Before you get started there are a few key things to keep in mind. These tips will ensure that you use your spray foam insulation equipment effectively, and safely.

• Proper Gear. Before you get started always be certain that you have the proper protective gear. A full suit and respirator, along with chemical resistant gloves and goggles, will help keep every inch of you protected from the spray foam chemicals. Spray foam is not something you want to inhale, or get covered in. While acetone will dissolve the foam when it is first laid down, once it sets it has to be scraped off to remove. Take the necessary precautions to ensure you stay safe and clean through the application process.
• Dry Surface. Before applying spray foam insulation always make sure that the surface is completely dry. A wet surface will prevent the foam from adhering, which will quickly ruin all of your hard work. If the surface hasn’t been exposed to moisture recently, it should be okay to apply; however, new constructions might require a bit of waiting, especially if they were constructed with new lumber. Do this before installing the first tip, and keep in mind that a new tip will be required anytime you stop spraying the insulation for more than 30 seconds, as the foam will harden and block the nozzle. This is why it’s equally important to plan out how you’ll be laying down the insulation. Make sure nothing will get in the way that will make you have to stop, plot out the areas you can cover, and in what order. In addition to that always ensure proper ventilation in the space, and place ladders where you can easily access them. All of this goes a long way towards ensuring a smooth installation.
• Windows And Outlets. Make sure to cover any windows and outlets in the area with plastic. This will help keep the spray foam from ruining any of these fixtures, and can make it easier to just spray without worrying about working around these areas.
• Around The Edges. Don’t jump in and try to fill the entire wall cavity in one go. Start by spraying around the perimeter of the cavity, putting down a layer about half an inch thick. This layer will expand as it sets and help fill any voids, while not creating bulges in the sheathing. Once the perimeter is laid down, wait a couple minutes before starting on the interior.
• Combine With Fiberglass. If you want to take advantage of spray foam, but also want to include fiberglass insulation, you can. Fill out the perimeter as described above, but fill in the interior with fiberglass insulation panels. This can help keep costs down, but still give you the air sealing benefits of spray foam.
