9 Ways to Keep Your Indoor Air Clean at Home

Having clean air is so important to your quality of living. You should periodically have your heating and cooling systems checked in order to ensure the highest air quality. Pollution, even inside your home, could be hazardous to your health, heart and lungs. There is not much that we can do about the air outside, unfortunately. We can only do what we can to reduce our own carbon footprint but unless everyone participates, there is still going to be pollution and irritants outside. However, it is up to you to have good air quality in your home. Here are some easy ways to keep your air clean inside.

  1. Stay away from wood burning fireplaces. They may look nice and give your home that nice, welcoming feeling but they don’t just give off heat and romantic atmospheres. Fireplaces that burn would also give out set and carbon which can make it very difficult to breathe. There is no inhalant that is worse than smoke.

  2. Speaking of smoke, actually smoking causes more than three quarters of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. You should not let anyone smoke in your house because they are not only damaging themselves but the secondhand smoke can cause just as much damage, if not more.

  3. Dust mites tend to burrow in mattresses and couches and carpet. They make life worse for asthmatics and people that suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In order to improve the air quality of your home you should make sure that your mattress covers and pillowcases are mite proof as well as bug proof. Washing them about once a week at a minimum will also help.

  4. The strong smelling cleaning products that we use to clean our homes could be irritating her lungs. Things that do not have a fragrance or actually the best kind of cleaners. Soap and water and vinegar are great cleaners and are very safe. If you need to use some sort of chemical, then make sure that no one else is home and the windows are open when you do so. Hairspray, perfumes, glues and even air fresheners can wreak havoc on our air quality.

  5. As much as we love our furry friends, can cause major breathing problems. This is particularly in reference to dogs and cats. Make sure that you were washing your hands after you pet your dog or other pet and try not to allow them into the bedroom. Letting your pet sleep on your bed could cause dander particles to burrow in your covers. If your climate permits, try and keep the animals outside as much as possible.

  6. Air filters are probably one of the most important ways that you can keep your air quality high. All systems should be ventilated through a filter and changing the filters at least every three months will help keep the air clean.

  7. Unfortunately there are so many things outside that can irritate and affect your lungs. If there are high winds or it is allergy season then you should probably keep your windows closed in order to keep out the poor air quality; unless of course, you are cleaning with a chemical as mentioned above.

  8. Make sure that your bathroom and kitchen’s have good ventilation systems in order to prevent mold and mildew. Dust mites also like humidity so you should do everything you can to keep the moisture levels low in your home. Using a dehumidifier can also help that.

  9. Just like fireplaces, wood burning stoves can be a problem. If you have one of these then you need to make sure that is completely enclosed with an excellent ventilation system. Gas stoves can also be problematic and less you have an automatic igniter which can cut down on escaping gas.

There are other ways that we can keep our air cleaning our homes but these are probably the most simple ways to begin to implement that. It’s important to make sure that you and your family are breathing well in order to enhance your quality of life. Following these easy steps will make it a lot easier for all of you to breath. The change will actually be noticeable and your family will appreciate your efforts to help them breathe better.
